Fear is defined as “an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.” At 55, having taken up dirt bike riding only 1 year before, I was paralyzed by fear coming down the steepest section of our new mountain trail. I lost control, fell off my bike, threw my helmet into the forest and was shaken and in tears. I can’t remember the last time fear brought me to tears.
Still shaking, with help through the steepest section, I got myself down the mountain but the battle began as to whether I would fight to get up and down it again. What I realized for me, an even bigger fear was not pushing through it to come out the other side.
I’m glad to say, I did get back on my bike and road up and down the mountain trail as high as it goes. I needed help on the steepest section coming down. I crashed more than once! I was shaking at the bottom and I know I’ll be shaking when I do it again but I’m so glad I didn’t let fear win.
Is there something you know you want to push yourself to do? If you do it, how would you feel?
