Thrive versus Survive- Lean In and Stand Tall

When I was running this week (it was hill and stairs day!) I was reminded of Sheryl Sandberg's book, Lean In, which challenges us to lean into leadership roles versus being the follower. Leaning in also relates to the power of working together. When you run you need to lean in for momentum and efficiency. This makes running naturally easier.

I also thought about the difference when I run versus when I walk. In contrast, when you walk you want to stand upright to support your spine. My nephew, and personal trainer at one time, compared walking tall to carrying a ladder. When you carry a ladder it is easiest to carry it straight up and down. It is incredibly awkward and uncomfortable to balance when the ladder is leaning forward. So, although I want to lean in when I run and lean in as a women not afraid to lead, I also know there are times when I must stop, stand tall and know how to best support myself. This can take confidence and knowing how to live out my values. Though the pressure may be to lean in, I know when to lean in or when just to stand tall.
